He soon became well known for his knowledge on the subject and was often asked to assist with projects ranging from the decoration of hotel- and restaurant interiors throughout Europe to sculptured gardens in the USA. Furthermore, Theo Evers helped to restore several important Dutch landmarks such as the 17th century castle Amerongen and the St Servaas church which is one of the oldest churches in The Netherlands, built on the grave of Servaas, the first bishop of Maastricht. Even though he has restored castles in Germany, Belgium and France to their former splendor, his most exotic project to date has probably been the remodeling of a romantic wedding chapel in Japan for which he even had stained-glass windows and altars shipped over from Europe. Surprisingly, the 'flying doctor' for buildings also found time to run a shop. His 7000 square meter showroom displays an astonishing array of garden and landscape designs, historic building materials and even entire interiors. Consequently you may find a pair of black painted wicker armchairs from Norway (lot 138), an early 18th century wrought iron gate over three meters high (lot 94) and a pair of Flemish carved freestone sphinxes from Namur (lot 124) under one roof. Quite an impressive line-up, but don't be deceived - the shop reveals only a fragment of what Theo Evers has to offer. Due to his extensive traveling around the globe, Theo can locate a truckload of original Dutch kinderkopjes with the same ease as a 19th century French fountain embellished with cherubs and dolphins (lot 105). Theo Evers sets out to discover a connection between the past and the present, between the old and the new, creating a contemporary relevance for objects from times gone by. He is only satisfied when this connection is achieved, when a historic object saved from destruction is successfully integrated into a building where people live and work. The present sale is a rare opportunity to enter Evers' world, where boundaries dissolve and the ages meet.
