Lot Essay
This elegant pair of Danish Empire open armchairs is almost identical to one illustrated on the front cover of Anton Jepsen's Signerede Danske Mobler, Herning, 1979 (also pp. 62-63). It bears the label of 'De ti forenede Snedkermesteres Meubelmagazin' [the ten united master cabinet-makers' warehouse], identifying it as the work of the celebrated group of Danish furniture makers around Johan Joachim Pengel who opened their Copenhagen shop at the corner of Bredgade and Kongens Nytorv in May 1819. Models for the refined stools en suite with the elegant armchairs are illustrated in 'Danske Empiremobler', Aeldra Nordisk Architektur, Copenhagen, 1924, figs. 7 and 8
