Lot Essay

Edmund Garvey was born at Kilkenny, Ireland, and was a pupil of Robert Carver. After studying in Rome and working in London, he practised in Bath where he became friends with Thomas Gainsborough. He painted European, English and Irish views, and was appointed R.A. over his contemporary, Joseph Wright of Derby.
