The deep rounded, translucent sides raised on a separately made spreading foot and carved in high relief with scrolling stems of tree peony, the blossoms positioned between the four undercut peony stem handles that rise to the rim, the domed cover with a carved and pierced band of peony scroll below an openwork peony sprig knop, a small opaque buff and pale brown area in the stone utilized for the carving of a butterfly, the translucent stone of pale celadon color with a pale russet flaw line in the bowl; with a well-carved reticulated wood stand

Lot Essay

Censers or perfumers of this type carved with flowers and foliate decoration and usually with flower sprig handles, either with both the bowl and cover pierced, or like the present example, just the cover, were popular during the Qianlong period. Two white jade examples that are still in the Qing Court collection are illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 42 - Jadeware (III), Hong Kong, 1995, pp. 53 and 54, nos. 42 and 43.
