A CARVED RED LACQUER ALTAR TABLE
18TH/19TH CENTURY
Of rectangular form, the top carved with a scene of forty-five luohans in a riverscape, engaged in various activities, some gathered around a sage seated on rocks below pine trees, others drinking tea, reading, sleeping or examining scrolls, with pavilions, bridges and hills in the distance amidst scrolling clouds, all against a diaper background and framed by a key-fret border, the sides densely carved with a composite design of chrysanthemum and peony blossoms, above an openwork apron and spandrels of squared scroll design, each of the two recessed legs with an openwork rectangular panel between reticulated panels with further related scroll design, the frame carved with further composite floral sprays, terminating in stepped feet
