The spirited figure with right foreleg raised, head tilted to the left and mouth open, the solidly modelled mane with undulating edge and parted forelock, with knotted tail, arrayed in tassel-hung trappings and a long blanket draped over the saddle, the crouper centered by a 'fire pearl', with traces of gilding and red, white and black pigment

Lot Essay

Compare the very similar painted pottery prancing horse, but lacking a 'fire pearl', sold in these rooms 4 June 1992, lot 233.

The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no. C105x28 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
