WANLI SIX-CHARCTER MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD (1573-1619)
The gently rounded sides painted in fifteenth century style on the exterior in rich tones of underglaze blue with two scenes, one of two ladies seated in a pavilion with a young male attendant in a fenced garden, with a phoenix perched in bamboo and a carp leaping from a lake in the distance, the other of a lady standing before a pavilion receiving another lady, the two scenes interrupted by trees within billowing clouds, all below a double-line border and above a band of classic scroll encircling the foot, the interior plain

Lot Essay

This bowl belongs to a group of Wanli wares closely associated with early 15th century prototypes such as one illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 34 - Blue and White Porcelain with Underglazed Red (I), Hong Kong, 2000, p. 157, no. 149. A similar Wanli example with related decoration is illustrated in Mingdai taoci daquan, Taipei, 1987, p. 414, while another was sold at Sotheby's, Hong Kong, 7 June 1994, lot 335.
