The sides decorated with two large panels, one with a flycatcher perched on a reed in a lotus pond, the other with a bird perched in a magnolia branch above peony, the two separated by circular panels of butterflies and flowers, all reserved on a ground of peony scroll, below a diaper band on the shoulder and chrysanthemum scroll on the neck

A similarly decorated vase, with birds perched amidst flowering branches within rectangular panels and reserved on a ground of peony scroll, also dated to the Kangxi period, is illustrated in E. Gorer and J. F. Blacker, Chinese Porcelain and Hard Stones, vol. I, London, 1911, pl. 112.
