The monkey is one of the twelve Zodiac animals and is associated with a mischievous character. Monkeys were also a popular subject as the monkey (hou) is a homonym for marquis (hou), the second highest grade among the nobility, and represents the aspiration for a corresponding rise in rank. The combination of the monkey and a horse expresses a wish for speedy promotion as an official.
