Lot Essay

This composition of intersecting horses has precedents in Mughal and popular Indian painting. The optical illusions were conceived either as animal studies for entertainment, or in some cases for religious use in tantric manuals; see A. Mookerjee and M. Khanna, The Tantric Way: Art, Science, Ritual, London, 1977, p. 135, for an example of the latter type of painting.
