In the 1970s Broota embarked upon his renowned allegorical 'Ape Series,' marking a clear departure from the darker canvases that signified his earlier work. The emaciated men exemplifying the suffering of the laboring classes were replaced by obese anthropomorphic apes in serio-comical settings. Winning the AIFACS award in 1973, this painting satirizes the police and judiciary serving as a social critique of India's decadence and corruption. For another work in this series entitled, That Untold Story, 1972, in K. Malik, Lalit Kala Contemporary 17, April 1974, p. 25, and published in numerous venues thereafter.
