Henri Michel Antoine Chapu (1833-1891) exhibited regularly in the Salon during the second half of the 19th century, winning awards in 1863, 1865, 1866 and a grand medal in 1867. His public works, carved in marble and stone, depicted allegorical subjects besides fine portrait busts, statues and groups. The more important were replicated in reduced bronze versions. This simple and honest portrayal of Joan of Arc as a humble shepherdess of a Lorraine village was Chapu's first major success when it was exhibited in 1872.
