J.L. Chave

Chave stands both as a monument to Hermitage and winemaking in general. The wines have been made traditionally without intervention for over five-hundred years. Named after the painter Bernard Cathélin, Chave's luxury cuvée is only produced in exceptional vintages from old vines in Les Bessards and aged in 100 new oak. The true jewel, however, may be the rare white Hermitage from his cellars, which can age gracefully seemingly forever.

Ermitage, Cuvée Cathélin--Vintage 1998
Rhône. J.L. Chave
"The opaque black/purple-colored 1998 Ermitage Cuvee Cathelin (200 cases) offers a huge nose of smoked licorice, blackberry, cassis, new saddle leather, and vanillin. Tasting like liqueur of Syrah, it is extremely full-bodied and awesomely concentrated, with formidable tannin as well as mind-blowing levels of extract and density. The tannin is sweet, and the wine seamless for a young Chave Hermitage." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #133 (Feb 2001)
