No matter your take on Mondavi's wines it is a fact, both in philosophy and in practice, that these wines are nothing like those of their "neighbors". In the last decade, Napa farmers & winemakers have pushed their grapes to the very limit of ripeness. In exchange for voluptuous wines these producers create wines with extraordinary alcohol levels that effectively unbalance the wine. Yes, they are jammy. Yes, they are hedonistic. But ask your self are they complex? Is fruit the only element by which we judge our wines? The vision of Mondavi's Reserve line is one of harmony and balance, a wine that is contemplative on it's own and at the table. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Reserve, is a wine of supple fruit qualities, black cherry, focused currant, spice, subtle oak flavors and occasional mint like complexities. There is a reason that this wine maintains its presence in the auction circuits and that reason is consistency.
