Château Pétrus--Vintage 1973
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel
Levels: bottom neck; one slightly torn label and one stained label
"Sacrifices were made to maximise richness by severe selection of grapes, resulting in an even smaller production than usual. Did it pay off? Certainly impressively purple in cask (1974) but loose-knit and bitter. A bit four-square and unexciting in the mid-1980s. More recently, less deep; good crisp Merlot-based aroma; fullish, 'meaty', quite stylish (1994). And at the pre-sale tasting in New York; attractive colour; honeyed nose; touch of caramel, dry finish. Last tasted Dec 1997 ** A fairly good '73 but will not improve." MB, Vintage Wine
