Maker's mark of Joseph Angell, London 1821, raised on three lion paw and leaf feet, gadroon rim and engraved with contemporary crest and motto, 31 cm. (12 1/4 in.) diameter, 931 gr. (29.9 oz.)

Lot Essay

The crest and motto are those of Traill, or Trayle (Ballylough House, Co. Antrim). This branch of the Scottish house of Traill, of Blebo, went to Ireland with Dr. James Traill, consecrated Bishop of Down and Connor 1765. The crest was assumed by Alexander Traill, who was shipwrecked in 1418, and escaped by clinging to a rock
