Lot Essay

'You see another typical fashion pose in the nude with a cigarette, who stands on the staircase. This is rather extravagant. In a dress it wouldn't work. It would be too "démodé", too dated. But here it works for me. The thought behind it is that what attracts me is to photograph a woman in the nude doing exactly what she would be doing in an elegant dress. This is not a satire of fashion photography. Not at all. It's a consciousness within myself.' - Helmut Newton, Nude Theory, pp.157-159
