Lot Essay

Doisneau had a friend, Robert Miquel, called 'Romi' who owned an antique shop in Paris. Romi had bought a nude that Doisneau noticed had attracted a lot of attention. "I arranged with Romi to sit in the shop, holding the Rolleiflex on my knee, to see if I could get some good pictures. Because there was a reflection in the window, passersby couldn't see what I was doing. All but the picture of the policeman were made in the space of two to three hours." (Doisneau as quoted in: Hamilton, Robert Doisneau: A Photographer's Life, Abbeville Press, 1995, p. 186)
