Lot Essay

From the series 'Masters of the Real' are: top row, left to right: 'Andreas Gursky,' 2000; 'Thomas Struth,' 2002; bottom row, left to right; 'Thomas Ruff,' 2001; 'Bernd und Hilla Becher,' 2001.

The youngest member of the Düsseldorf School, Schaller studied Visual Anthropology in Hamburg, Gottingen and Siena. He works in series of interiors that serve as portraits of their inhabitants. In the present lot, his fellow photographers' work spaces undergo the same intense scrutiny they make of their own subjects.
