Printed in 1993, this work is from an edition of 3.

An outstanding example of Demand's early work, and chosen for exhibit in the recent Museum of Modern Art retrospective, Flügel (Grand Piano) delivers with a poignant human element. Much of Demand's work deals with social, political or cultural history, things to which the artist passionately responds. Flügel (Grand Piano) is more personally affected, depicting family photographs atop a grand piano, exemplifying the perfect family life. Originating as a sculptor, Demand used photography only as a means to document his work, but when the documentary photographs did not illustrate his sculptures in a precise, accurate way, a new concept was born. Demand then began creating elaborate cardboard sculptures, specifically with the intention to be photographed, destroying the sculpture once the picture is made. The end result is neither a sculpture, nor a photograph, but a process of development, made with great intention.
