WILLIAMSON, Captain Thomas (1790-1815) and HOWETT, Samuel (?1765-1822). Oriental Field Sports; being a complete, detailed, and accurate description of the Wild Sports of the East. London: William Bulmer & Co. for Edward Orme, 1807. Oblong folio (472 x 588mm). Additional hand-coloured engraved title, 38 hand-coloured aquatints only (of 40, lacking plates XXIII 'Shooting a Leopard' and XXVIII 'Driving a Bear out of Sugar Canes') by H. Merke, J. Hamble and Viveres after Howett and Williamson (additional title soiled, with piece torn from upper margin and repaired, 5 plates with long tears at lower margin, one text leaf cleanly but severely torn, creasing to last few leaves including last plate, some spotting and staining with a few lighter spots and stains to plates). Contemporary half roan gilt by Seton of Edinburgh, with his label (boards detached, worn).
FIRST EDITION OF 'THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK ON INDIAN SPORT IN EXISTENCE' (Schwerdt). This copy contains plate XXXI in its earlier state, lettered 'Hunting Jackalls' and not, as in Tooley's collation, the later 'Jackals rescueing a hunted brother'. According to Tooley, 'this must be the first issue of the plate. It is rare'. 'It is possible ... that all copies bound from parts, or the parts printing, contain the earlier state' (Abbey) which would suggest this volume contains the subscribers parts and therefore 'the finest impressions of the plates' (Tooley). Abbey Travel, 427; Lowndes VII, 2936; Schwerdt II, 297; Tooley (1954) 508.
