FITZCLARENCE, George Augustus, Earl of Munster (1794-1842). Journal of a Route across India through Egypt to England. London: John Murray, 1819. 4° (272 x 212mm). Half-title, dedication leaf, 7 maps and plans including 1 folding map, 12 plates including 9 coloured aquatints by R. Havell after Fitzclarence (lacking errata and Directions to Binder leaves called for by Abbey, neat tear repaired to map, offsetting, occasional light spotting and staining). Contemporary sheep, double gilt filet on boards (rebacked, corners repaired, scuffed, lower hinges cracked). Provenance: Reverend W. Wheeler (gift inscription on title) -- The Cavalry Club (booklabel on pastedown).
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY from the author. The son of the actress Dorothy Jordan and the duke of Clarence, later King William IV, Fitzclarence was sent to India to serve under Lord Moira, becoming his aide-de-camp there. In December 1817, bearing a peace treaty from the Maharaja Sindhia, he returned to England, via the overland route. The publication of his account of his journey home opened up new interests to him and as well as becoming a fellow of the Royal Society, and of the Royal Geographical, Antiquarian, Astronomical, and Geological societies of London, he was also a founder member, and later a president, of the Royal Asiatic Society (DNB).
