Sparrman sailed from Table Bay on the Resolution on 22 November 1772 in the post of assistant naturalist to Johann Forster, but returned to South Africa in March 1775 on conclusion of the voyage. While his account includes a number of details of Cook's second voyage which are not mentioned elsewhere, the main narrative concerns a 10 month expedition made through Kaffraria after his return.
