Eastern Gate of the Jummah Musjid at Delhi
Remains of an Ancient Building near Firoz Shah's Cotilla, Delhi
The Western Entrance of Shere Shah's Fort, Delhi
3 hand-coloured aquatints, drawn and engraved by Thomas Daniell, on thick Whatman paper (615 x 475mm to 650 x 490 mm), dated 1795 [the first two] and 1796, from part I of Thomas and William Daniell's Oriental Scenery, London: 1795-1797, with the title page for this work (inner margins lightly worn, not affecting image, first plate creased with small ink mark in the bottom right margin and light soiling). Abbey Travel 420 nos. 2, 8, 14.
Three fine views from part I of the Daniells' magnificent Oriental Scenery. The Daniells played a pre-eminent role in recording and documenting the country for European eyes. Their seven-year tour and the publication of this work brought to the public in Britain an unrivalled view of the scenery and architecture of this fabled land. Daniell was so impressed by its grandeur that he chose his view of the Eastern Gate of the Jummah Musjid to be the very first print of the Oriental Scenery.
