Lot Essay

Kleber assumed command of the French Army in Egypt on Bonaparte's departure for Paris in August 1799. Mourad Bey, together with Ibrahim Bey, had been in control of Alexandria on the arrival of the French forces there in 1798. After the Battle of the Pyramids he fled South but, angered by his cool reception by representatives of the Porte, in 1800 allied himself with Kleber, who appointed him Governor of Upper Egypt. He proved most loyal to France. Kleber was assassinated by a Turkish fanatic in June 1800.
