Mandi, circa 1780
Each gouache heightened with gold and silver on paper, one depicting Raja Shamser Sen of Mandi (1727-1781), seated in a red costume and a white garland walking with a black crook and attended by a maidservant who waves a morchal, red and white ruled margin, red leaf, retouched area in sky to upper right, mounted, the other showing Raja Surma Sen (1781-8) of Mandi seated smoking a hookah, behind him an attendant with a morchal and kerchief, two other attendants, one with a silver stick, stand before him, red and white ruled margin, red leaf, titled above in nasta'liq and below in takri, the reverse with further sketchy black takri inscriptions

Shamsher Sen's daughter married Raja Prakash Chand of Guler. The female attendant in Guler style on the first of these two paintings, with her striped and pleated skirt and Guler features, may be due to this connection.
