A 3-page autograph letter in German, signed, headed Château de Muzot, sur Sierre, Valais, 6 December 1921, to Mr. Tanner, thanking him for drawing his attention to an exhibition of Degas' sculptures (small tear to upper margin of both pages). Rilke explains that, unfortunately, he was not able to go and see it because he has been working at his new retreat ("die strenge Zurückgezogenheit in meinem neuen Retraite ... hatte damals schon begonnen. Sie verpflichtet mich zur Arbeit 'sur place' und zur ununterbrochenen Immobilität").

Lot Essay

Rilke's new retreat, a congenial environment for writing, was found for him by his Swiss patron W. Reinhard. Here, Rilke wrote within three weeks the two groups of Die Sonette an Orpheus and composed five more Duineser Elegien.
