Lot Essay

In the years between 1780 and 1820 Oudh was ruled by a sucession of nawabs who shared a taste for luxury and Lucknow, their capital, became renowned as a high-living city. Designs for extravagant objects made for the ruler and his courtiers were drawn in detailed sketches such as these. These designs were often fanciful to the point of flamboyance and the witty drawings stand as works of art in their own right.

Three drawings from a similar series in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art are published in Leach, Linda York, Paintings from India, no.56 pp.190-1. Leach also mentions a set of 58 comparable drawings are in the V&A.
