The Mughal taste for luxury extended to beautifying otherwise functional objects, thereby imbuing them with an almost ceremonial importance. Whilst carved jade crutch handles are not uncommon, this one, an especially large and exuberant example, is lavishly set with rubies, diamonds and other stones.
Crutches are often illustrated in Mughal miniature painting. Several examples are in the Windsor Castle Padshahnama, made for Shah Jahan. See Milo Cleveland Beach and Ebba Koch, King of the World: The Padshahama: An Imperial Mughal Manuscript from the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, Washington DC, 1997, pl.37-38, pp.94-97.
