JAMES ABBOTT MCNEILL WHISTLER (1834-1903)
A 4-page autograph letter, signed, from 2 Lindsay Road, Thursday morning February 13th, to W.R.S. Markwell Esq., apologising for missing an appointment to hand over a picture: "Thinking, as I had heard nothing, that my brother must have been mistaken as to the day ... I then said nothing to the servant ... but of course my guardian angel who has of late been most neglectful of my happiness (I shall think seriously of discharging him) managed all this disappointment for me! he believes it to his duty to correct me for my sins! ... Can Mrs. Markwell forgive this stupidity on my part! I venture to entreat her to accept as a peace offering, these etchings ... I will deliver your message to Rossetti and bring him with me some day to see you" (creased on folds). With original stamped addressed envelope.
