Lot Essay

The sitter, whose family had inherited the manor of Padworth, near Reading, was M.P. for Berkshire in 1774-6 and married Katherine (1729-1801) daughter and co-heiress of Sir William St. Quintin, Bart. Dated by Waterhouse to the early 1760s, this portrait of Christopher Griffith Jr. (1731-76) was painted at around the same time as a companion portrait of his wife and father (op. cit., nos. 328 & 330).
