Lot Essay

Harpignies became a student of Achard in 1846, having toured France as an amateur 8 years earlier. Until 1852 they travelled around Belgium, Germany and Italy. He met Corot and showed at the Salon in 1853. He opened a studio for artists and spent much of his time painting in Italy. His landscapes are mainly known for their depiction of forests.
