Contemporary English calf, spines with gilt morocco lettering-pieces in 2 compartments (a little scuffed, cracking on joints). A FINE SET OF THE SECOND AND BEST EDITION, much expanded from the 1705 edition with the voyages of Middleton to Hudson's Bay, Bering, Woodes Rogers, Shelvocke, Roggeveen and Anson, and edited by John Campbell. This edition is further prized for its maps. Tasman's original map is printed with inset notes on Quiros' voyage and the advantages of Australian colonization; and the fine map and account of Bering's first voyage 1725-30 is followed by the first printed account of his second voyage 1733-1741. The map for the first voyage was re-engraved from Du Halde's description of China, 1735, and most plates are re-engraved from their original printed accounts. Harris compiled these many narratives to compete with Churchill's popular collection of voyages first published in 1704 and fully updated in 1744-1747. Whereas Churchill concentrated on primary accounts, Harris chose travel narratives, vol. I being on navigation, circumnavigations and voyages to India, and vol. II on travels to the Americas, Europe and Asia. Hill 775; Cox I, p. 10; Lada-Mocarski 3. (2)
