The Universal Traveller: or, a Compleat Description Of the several Foreign Nations of the World ... Brought down to the present Time. London: Richard Baldwin, 1762-1759. 2 volumes, 2° (377 x 245mm). 226 plates and maps on 197 leaves, 153 engraved plates, 2 folding, and 44 maps, 25 folding, vol. I title in red and black. (World map browned at fold and repaired.) Contemporary English speckled calf gilt, boards with borders of gilt double rules, spines gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-pieces in 2 (some rubbing and scuffing, corners bumped and with neat repairs, some cracking on joints and spine, rebacked retaining original spines but not lettering-pieces). Provenance: I.M. Eyre (early signatures on titles).

A mixed edition of this popular work on the cultural and physical geography of all Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas, copiously illustrated with views re-engraved from the original works in which they first appeared. The largely self-educated and well-travelled Mr. Salmon lived in both the East and West Indies, published his Modern History or the Present State of all Nations in 1739 and sailed with Lord Anson on his 1740-1744 circumnavigation. This experience formed the subject for a series of titles he published in multiple editions for the remainder of his life, comprising of world gazetteers, geographical grammars and histories, and travel narratives.
