CAPTAIN JAMES BURNEY (1750-1721)
A Chronological History of North-Eastern Voyages of Discovery; and of the Early Eastern Navigations of the Russians. London: Luke Hansard & Sons for Payne and Foss and John Murray, 1819. 8° (220 x 135mm). 2 engraved folding maps, one by J. Russell. Retaining final blank X4. (Scattered light spotting, some light browning to lower margins.) 20th-century half morocco gilt by Bayntun-Riviere, Bath, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in 2 and dated at the foot, other compartments decorated with ship tools, top edge gilt.
FIRST EDITION. A WORK WHICH INCLUDES TWO IMPORTANT ACCOUNTS OF COOK'S THIRD VOYAGE. 'Burney had originally intended to annex an account of the maritime discoveries of the Russians as a supplement to his Chronological History of the Discoveries in the South Sea or Pacific Ocean [London: 1803-1817; see previous lot], and this book contains his important researches on that subject' (Hill). It contains, amongst others, accounts of voyages in search of the North-East Passage to Japan and China, Russian explorations in Kamchatka, Siberia, and the Kurile Islands, and Cook's voyages along the coast of North-West America and through the Bering Straits. During Cook's second voyage, Burney had served as an able seaman aboard the Resolution and second lieutenant on the Adventure, acting as interpreter to Omai on his return to England. In 1776 he sailed with Cook again on the third voyage (during which he witnessed Cook's death in Hawaii), serving as first lieutenant of the Resolution, before being transferred to the command of the ship on Clerke's death. His accounts of Cook's third voyage -- 'Captain James Cook on the North-west Coast of America' (chapter XIX), 'Captain Cook through Bering's Strait, and in the Sea North of the Strait' (chapter XX), and 'Sequel' (chapter XXI) -- contain important material not found elsewhere. Beddie 1657-1658; Cox II, p. 497; Hill 223; Howes B-1001; Sabin 9386.
