OTTO VON KOTZEBUE (1787-1846).
A Voyage of Discovery into the South Sea and Beering's Straits, for the purpose of Exploring a North-East Passage, undertaken in the years 1815-1818, at the expense of His Highness the Chancellor of the Empire, Count Romanzoff, in the Ship Rurick. London: A. and R. Spottiswoode for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1821. 3 volumes, 8° (220 x 140mm). Half-titles, list of plates, 8 hand-coloured aquatint plates, one engraved plate and 7 maps, 4 folding. (Some slight offsetting or spotting.) 20th-century half crimson, straight-grained morocco gilt by Bayntun, Bath, spines gilt in compartments, lettered in 2, top edges gilt (spines very lightly faded).
FINE COPY OF THE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of the second Russian circumnavigation, with plates and maps not in the first Russian edition of 1821-1823. Also with Krusenstern's 'Analysis of the Islands Discovered by the Rurick in the Great Ocean' which stresses the need for subsequent [Russian] explorations, and Eschscholtz's chronicle of diseases of the crew during the expedition. Vocabularies of the Marianas and Caroline Islands are appended to vol. II. The English edition was translated from the German edition of the same year by Hannibal Lloyd Evans of the Foreign Office, London -- a measure of concern, perhaps, at the Russian presence in the South Seas and the Pacific Northwest, a possible route to Hudson's Bay. The voyage was successful in all but its ambition to find the Northwest Passage. Excellent charts were completed of the North Pacific coasts of Asia and America, the Aleutians, Pribilofs, St. Lawrence Island, and through the Bering Strait where Kotzebue Sound was discovered; California, Easter Island and Hawaii were visited and described; and Micronesia was surveyed. Hill 944; Forbes 528; Arctic Bibliography 9195; Lada-Mocarski 80.
