Nourse, 1774. 4° (310 x 250mm). 12 engraved folding or double-page plates, 3 engraved folding maps, 11 folding letterpress tables. Half-title and directions to the binder bound in at the end. (A very few small repairs in margins, occasional very light soiling to deckle edges.) 18th-century half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-piece in one, others decorated with fleurons (light wear at extremities). Provenance: Brent Gration-Maxfield, 1968 (signature on front pastedown).
FIRST EDITION, A TALL COPY of the future Lord Mulgrave's 'important addition to early nautical science in the polar regions ... The voyage is perhaps better remembered for the presence of a young Horatio Nelson, as midshipman aboard the Carcase, and his encounter with a polar bear. This is the narrative of some member of the expedition, containing particulars not given in the official account' (Hill).
