SIR EDWARD BELCHER (1799-1877)

The Last of the Arctic Voyages; being a narrative of the expedition in H.M.S. Assistance... in search of Sir John Franklin, during the years 1852-53-54. London: John Edward Taylor for Lovell Reeve, 1855. 2 volumes, 8° (254 x 159mm). Half-titles. 4 maps, 3 engraved and folding, one lithographic, 36 lithographic plates, 12 coloured. (A very few, very occasional, small spots, faint dampstain to many plates, small tear to one folding map.) Original dark green cloth, blocked in blind and gilt (light rubbing, spines lightly and evenly sunned). Provenance: J.D. Annear, 'Belle Vue' Richmond (inscription on pastedowns) -- Berkelouw (bookseller's ticket).

FIRST EDITION. This expedition was the last officially sent in search of Franklin. Belcher explored Wellington Channel, and sent Kellett and McClintock to scout Melville Island, where they found and rescued McClure in the Investigator. Ice-bound in 1854, Belcher abandoned four of his five vessels, and returned home. One of the ships, the Resolute, floated free, and after drifting a thousand miles, was recovered by the Americans, refitted, and presented to Queen Victoria as a slightly embarrassing gift.
