Lot Essay

Hunting groups by Pierre-Jules Mêne (d. 1871) are consistently the best among the genre. The wax model for this popular work was exhibited at the Salon in 1869. The following year, the group was edited in bronze in three variations - without dogs, with three dogs and, as here, with five hounds.

Another cast of this model was sold in these rooms, 25 February 1999, lot 80 (£18,400).
