HASSAM, Childe (1859-1935). Manuscript title: "Exposition de Chicago." N.p., [1893].

Hand-colored manuscript title bearing the arms of the Queen of Belgium at head and 13 color-printed aquatints by Childe Hassam, with extensive hand-finishing, each mounted and with manuscript title beneath image, images each approximately 129 x 193 mm, overall 287 x 368. Bound in contemporary blue-green crushed levant morocco, metal catches and clasps, edges gilt (some minor sunning and rubbing). Provenance: the Queen of Belgium (arms on title).

A superb series of views of the Columbian Exposition, made by Childe Hassam while attending the fair. The subjects are: the Administration Building; Upper Grand Basin; United States Government Building; Fine Art Palace; Agricultural Building; Machinery Hall; Horticultural Building; Electricity Building; Manufactures and Liberal Arts Building; Fisheries Building; Hall of Mines and Mining; Transportation Building; and Woman's Building.

Hassam's views are very rare: neither print records nor book records record any examples selling at auction for at least thirty years. Several gouaches and watercolors of the Columbian Exposition by Hassam have appeared on the market, but those too are very scarce. The present series of views was most likely printed in a small limitation and distributed to notable figures, dignataries and heads of state, as with the present copy's presentation title to the Queen of Belgium.
