BANCROFT, Hubert Howe (1832-1918). The Book of the Fair. An Historical and Descriptive Presentation of the World's Science, Art, and Industry, as Viewed through the Columbian Exposition at Chicago in 1893. Chicago and San Francisco: Bancroft, 1893.
25 parts in 2 volumes, 2o. Illustrations in text. Modern half calf, original wrappers bound in at end of vol. 2.
A fine copy bound from the parts of Bancroft's extensive survey of the Columbian Exposition. "After the 1876 Centennial Exposition, the next American effort at mounting a World's Fair was the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. It was intended to coincide with the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the New World but was delayed a year. Chicago was booming: the city's population had more than doubled in the preceding decade but it had a dubious reputation as a rough frontier city. The fair served as a 'coming out party' for Chicago as a world-class city: by the time the fair closed at the end of October, 21.5 million people had paid for admission" (Harvard University Library Open Collections Program, Women Working, 1870-1930).
