Vallotton's superb woodcut series was printed in an edition of approximately 30 sets only. The Exposition opened in April 1900. Otto Bierbaum reproduced these woodcuts in his Berlin review "Die Insel," starting in October 1901. The "Window of Lalique," in which René Lalique presented his new creations inspired by the French and Japanese symbolists, is one of the most famous of the series. The titles are: Le Trottoir Roulant (The Moving Footway); L'Ondée (The Downpour); La Vitrine de Lalique (The Window of Lalique); Cinq Heures (Five O'Clock); Rue du Cáire (Cairo Street); and Feu d'artifice (Fireworks).
