RENOUARD, Paul (1845-1924). En Commémoration de l'Exposition Universelle 1900. Paris, 1900.
Broadsheets (632 x 794 mm). Letterpress list of plates, letterpress preface and 40 heliogravure plates on 37 sheets, including frontispiece (some pale mold spotting, a few small marginal repairs). Laid loose in modern blue portfolio.
LIMITED EDITION, SIGNED BY PAUL RENOUARD on the list of plates: "Ex[emplaire] No. 31 Commissariat Général de l'Exposition Paul Renouard."
Paul Renouard, printmaker, draughtsman, illustrator and painter, was born in France at Cour-Cheverny, Loir et Cher. After working as a house decorator he entered the studio of Isidore Alexandre Augustin Pils at the "Ecole des Beaux-Arts" Paris in 1868; they worked together on the decoration of the Paris Opera where Renouard executed some ceilings (1875). Renouard characterised his plates as "snapshots, fixing rapid gestures and movements." He published in circa 1881 a luxury album containing 30 etchings entitled "Opera" and first exhibited at the "Salon" in Paris in 1877, having submitted pen and ink sketches of actors. He became a member of the "Société des artistes Français" and of the "Société Nationale des Beaux-arts" and won the gold medal in 1889 (Exposition Universelle) and in 1900. This suite of plates commemorating the exhibition was apparently done in a very small limitation, possibly for limited distribution to officials of the proceedings. According to both book and print auction records, no copies have been sold in at least 30 years, and only 2 appear to be in institutional collections, according to the RLG Union Catalogue.
