Lot Essay

Although Bonnet returned to The Netherlands in 1958, the influences of his wanderings around the world remained very vivid in his work. The preoccupation with the portrait, with skilfully contrasted light is a remnant of his Italian period. The interest for mystique and ritual is clearly derived from his Balinese period.

Although living in the Netherlands Bonnet was very much dedicated to the preservation of the indigenous life style of the Balinese, which he felt was constantly eroded by Western missionaries and tourism. He made four trips back to Indonesia, and although the spirit of Bali was in his veins, they must have been very inspirational for his work from this period.
