Lot Essay

The knot count is 9H x 10V per cm. sq.

The present lot is the only Koum Kapi rug of three in this sale that bears the actual signature of Zareh Penyamin within one of the central metal-thread palmettes. Zareh is still widely considered to have been the leading master weaver of his time within the Armenian workshops of Istanbul. His attention to draftsmanship and detail are a few of the many attributes which are associated with his workmanship. A very similar example was sold in these Rooms, 16 October 2003, lot 150.
