The present lot is a classic example of a type of Anatolian rug referred to as "Transylvanian". It is of the same date and design as those found in the collections housed in the Protestant churches and museums in Brasov, an area of Transylvania. Both the Black Church, inv.276 and the Blumenau Church, 286 in Brasov hold a number of 16th and 17th century Anatolian rugs including similar double niche rugs with a variety of colours.
