Cynthia Cary was of the generation in Newport that emerged from the gilded age, possessing the self-assurance and comfortable confidence, resulting from prior generations of wealth and privilege. Mrs. Cary resided at Elm Court, the Bellevue Avenue family home for four generations, and furnished it during the early years of the 20th century with taste and discernment. Her approach to jewelry also embraced these sentiments and her collection reflected the height of the Belle Epoque era, an epoch of high fashion and opulence. Her life was one of quiet luxury surrounded by her friends that included Janet Auchincloss and Mary Whitehouse. Guy Cary, her son, continued to live a contented life at Elm Court, which remained as it had been for years.
