The stones were cherished for many different reasons. Not only were they deemed symbolic values such as wealth, power and strength but the stones were believed to have mystical even magical powers. The bearer of a diamond would be protected from feared evil spirits, disease and nightmares and would be endowed with courage, wisdom and healing powers. Some ancient cultures even believed diamonds were tears of the Gods or splinters from falling stars. For many centuries, the diamond has been a symbol of everlasting love, prosperity and power. Diamond is the hardest, most resistant mineral produced by nature and bares the potential for crystalline perfection. These characteristics, combined with striking beauty, have merited the diamonds high esteem and status. In nature, the excavation of many tons of earth is necessary in order to recover a gem-quality diamond of between 1 and 2 carats. Accordingly, the discovery of a large top quality diamond, permitting to creation of a faceted gem over 25 carats, is one of nature's extraordinary phenomena- a true gift to mankind. In the fascinating realm of natural colour diamonds, those of a distinct pink hue are among the rarest and most sought after. Pink diamonds have for many centuries become the prized possession of nobility, knowledgeable collectors and the social elite. A number of the world's historically most famous diamonds are notable because of their lovely pink coloration; including the 185 ct Darya-i-noor, the 25.15 ct Agra, the 20.53 ct Hortensia, and the 9.01 ct Conde. The 25.02 carat diamond described in the above mentioned Diamond Report is one of these rarities. It possesses a colour and a high degree of transparency, which are particular to the world's finest natural type IIa diamond. Diamonds of this type and size, displaying such a superior quality, are particularly rare and have been unearthed from only a limited number of sources around the world, such as South Africa, Brazil and India.
