This drawing perhaps best exemplifies what Wilkie's fellow student in Edinburgh, John Burnet, meant when he said '[He] surpassed, and that from the first, all his companions in comprehending the character of whatever he was set to draw... [he required to know] what was the action, what was the sentiment.'
