Poggio Gherardo is a crenellated villa at Settignano, just north-east of Florence, where Boccaccio set his Decameron. Crane painted the watercolour when he and his wife were staying there with Janet Ross and her husband, prominent members of the Anglo-Florentine community, in October 1890. Lord Leighton was among their fellow guests. The holiday is described in Crane's autobiography, An Artist's Reminiscences, 1907, pp. 349-52.
